About this case study

This is a modeled research workflow, not proof of product-market fit. Public conversations can sharpen an audience hypothesis but cannot represent an entire market.

A demographic is not yet a target audience

A founder describes the audience as “busy professionals.” The label sounds plausible, but it is too broad to shape a useful landing page, search campaign, or community response. It says little about the moment that makes someone look for a solution.

The team reframes the audience around a job and a pain: who is trying to do what, what breaks in the current workflow, and what consequence makes the problem urgent. Three narrow hypotheses are more useful than one enormous persona because each can be tested against different language and conversations.

The objective is not to discover a perfect audience in one pass. It is to remove weak segments early and find one group whose problem appears often enough, specifically enough, and urgently enough to justify deeper research.

Test each audience hypothesis

The founder can give every hypothesis the same evidence test:

  • Create a separate campaign description for each audience and keep the app’s core outcome constant.
  • Add negative instructions that exclude adjacent users whose needs the current product cannot serve.
  • Generate search phrases around symptoms, failed workarounds, repeated mistakes, and requests for help—not category keywords.
  • Review public Reddit posts and comments for first-person pain, recency, specificity, and a credible fit with the app.
  • Compare the language and quality of the strongest conversations before selecting the first ideal customer profile.

Turn conversations into positioning evidence

Amplispect scores candidates against the campaign so the founder can review stronger intent signals first. The score organizes the queue; it does not replace reading the source or deciding whether the app genuinely fits.

The founder records recurring triggers, current alternatives, objections, and the words people use for the desired outcome. A segment that generates many topical mentions but little first-person pain may be less useful than a smaller segment with clear, repeated urgency.

The selected audience should then influence the homepage headline, examples, onboarding path, and first content topics. If those product decisions remain generic, the research has not yet changed the go-to-market strategy.

The modeled operational outcome

The founder moves from one vague persona to three tested hypotheses and one focused initial ICP, supported by real problem statements, disqualifiers, and objections. The output is a sharper experiment—not a claim that the whole market has been validated.

The research guardrail

Reddit users are a self-selected sample. Confirm the hypothesis with interviews, landing-page behavior, activation data, and—when appropriate—research in other communities before making large product or budget decisions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the target audience for my app?

Start with a specific job, problem, and trigger rather than a broad demographic. Test a few narrow hypotheses against real conversations, then validate the strongest one through interviews and product behavior.

What makes a useful ideal customer profile?

A useful ICP identifies who has the problem, the situation that creates urgency, the workaround they use today, why current options fail, and who should be excluded from the campaign.

Can lead scores identify the correct audience automatically?

No. Scores help prioritize results within the campaign definition. If the hypothesis or description is weak, the ranked results can still point in the wrong direction and require human review.

When should the founder narrow the audience further?

Narrow it when different subgroups have different triggers, objections, product requirements, or activation paths. Separate campaigns make those differences easier to observe.
